INDUSTRIES SERVED
SEAL THE EQUIPMENT. PROTECT THE PRODUCT. KEEP THE LINE RUNNING.
Mixers, blenders, conveyors, and filling equipment in food and beverage processing operate in washdown environments with strict sanitary requirements. Product leakage from poorly sealed shafts means lost material, contamination risk, and regulatory exposure — and conventional contact seals wear out quickly in these conditions. There is a tested fix for both problems.

THE ENVIRONMENT
WHAT MAKES THIS ENVIRONMENT DIFFERENT.
Food and beverage processing facilities operate under a combination of equipment reliability and regulatory constraints that most industrial environments don’t share. Mixers, blenders, agitators, and conveyors run in environments that require routine washdown with water and chemical sanitizers. The equipment that seals product in and contaminants out has to function reliably in those conditions — and it has to do so with materials that are approved for contact with food-grade environments.
Conventional contact seals fail in this environment for the same reasons they fail everywhere else — they wear. A lip seal that degrades under continuous shaft rotation develops a leak path. Mechanical packing on a mixer stuffing box requires regular adjustment and eventually scores the shaft. In a standard industrial plant, that’s a maintenance problem. In a food processing facility, it’s a product loss problem, a food safety problem, and a regulatory problem simultaneously.
Bearing failures on motors and drives in wet, high-humidity environments compound the issue. IP-rated motors running in washdown environments still require positive bearing protection — the motor enclosure alone does not prevent moisture from entering the bearing housing through the shaft seal over time. Bearing failures on perishable product lines stop production at exactly the moment stoppages are most expensive.
Kelley Industrial specifies permanent, maintenance-free solutions for both problems. The Air Mizer Food Grade shaft seal eliminates product leakage from mixer and agitator shafts without wearing parts or shaft contact. IP66-rated Inpro/Seal bearing isolators protect motor and drive bearings from moisture ingress in washdown service for the lifetime of the equipment.

PROCESS EQUIPMENT SHAFT SEALING
INPRO/SEAL AIR MIZER FOOD GRADE SHAFT SEALS
Mixers, blenders, and agitators in food and beverage processing create chronic product leakage through worn packing and lip seals — loose powder through a dry mix shaft, slurry weeping past a worn seal, liquid product migrating down the shaft during production. The Air Mizer Food Grade shaft seal eliminates that leakage path permanently using a positive air purge. No wearing surfaces. No shaft contact. No shaft grooving. Full articulation to accommodate the radial run-out, axial movement, and angular misalignment that mixers and agitators generate simultaneously. Constructed of FDA-approved materials throughout — stainless steel, PTFE, and food-grade elastomers — for direct compatibility with food processing environments and chemical cleaning cycles.

BEARING ISOLATION IN WASHDOWN ENVIRONMENTS
INPRO/SEAL BEARING ISOLATORS
Motors, gearboxes, and drives operating in food processing washdown environments are exposed to sustained moisture, cleaning chemical mist, and humidity levels that degrade lubricant and cause bearing failures well ahead of rated service life. IP66-rated Inpro/Seal bearing isolators prevent moisture and contaminant ingress permanently — without wearing parts, without maintenance intervals, and without the shaft contact that causes labyrinth seals to fail over time. The VB45-S and mini66 designs cover the full range of motor and drive frame sizes encountered in food and beverage processing applications.

SEPCO COMPRESSION PACKING & MECHANICAL SEALS
Pumps and valves in food and beverage processing service require packing constructions that are chemically compatible with the product being handled and with the cleaning agents used in sanitation cycles. SEPCO expanded PTFE and PTFE-based packing constructions provide broad chemical inertness, FDA compliance, and low shaft friction for pump and valve applications where sanitary requirements and chemical cleaning compatibility are non-negotiable.

APPLICATION EXAMPLE
WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE IN THE FIELD
A food manufacturing facility in the Midwest was losing product through leaking mixer shaft seals across a fleet of mixers running three shifts. The maintenance cycle required packing replacement every six months per mixer — a recurring cost in both materials and production downtime that had been absorbed as normal operating expense for years.
Kelley Industrial specified Inpro/Seal Air Mizer Food Grade shaft seals for the mixer fleet. The product loss was eliminated entirely. The six-month packing replacement cycle was removed from the maintenance schedule. The shaft seals have required no maintenance since installation.
The dollar value of the product loss and the maintenance labor that was eliminated is straightforward to calculate. The more relevant point is that the problem was treated as a cost of operation for years before a permanent solution was applied. That pattern — absorbing a solvable problem as a line item — is more common in food processing than any other industry we serve.
